Why breathability is essential for your animal's comfort...
Your animal will most likely be irritable and uncomfortable in wet or damp conditions if the breathability of its waterproof rug or coat is compromised. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the rug/coat can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain durable water-repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of your animal's rug/coat to ensure comfort. Over time it wears away and needs to be restored with Nikwax Rug Proof™.
Waterproof fabrics must be breathable...
Some animals including dogs and horses may be exposed to adverse weather whilst outdoors. When it rains, waterproof rugs and coats are used to keep them dry and comfortable.
It is important that these waterproof fabrics allow moisture vapour to pass through or "breathe"; otherwise moisture cannot evaporate, so it condenses on the inside of the item. Additionally, if the outer fabric absorbs water and "gets wet", the product's breathability will be reduced. Both of these situations result in your animal being cold and uncomfortable.
Breathability of rugs and coats can be maintained by ensuring good durable water-repellency (DWR). Nikwax Rug Proof™ adds DWR, which prevents water absorption whilst maintaining breathability, keeping your animals dry and comfortable.
Use Nikwax Rug Proof™ when your animal's rugs and coats absorb water...
Your waterproof animal rugs and coats may absorb water simply because they are dirty. First try cleaning them using Nikwax Rug Wash™ and if your animal's rug or coat is relatively new or recently re-treated, the durable water-repellent layer (DWR) will be revived simply by cleaning. However, once the rug/coat has become well worn, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Rug Proof™ after first cleaning with Nikwax Rug Wash™.
Proper cleaning can be as important as treatment...
Using the correct cleaning product is as important as using the correct DWR treatment. Ordinary cleaning products leave a thin water-absorbing film on materials, which masks their water-repellency (DWR). Therefore, always clean your animal's waterproof rugs and coats with Nikwax Rug Wash™. Remember that dirt itself works against water-repellency, so regular cleaning will improve performance.

Nikwax Rug Proof provides durable water-repellency (DWR) whilst maintaining breathability. It is quick and simple to apply in the washing machine and its DWR develops as it air dries.
Nikwax Rug Wash™ has been specially designed and optimised for breathable waterproof animal rugs and coats. It leaves a flexible water-repellent finish on individual fibres, which allows moisture vapour to pass through, maintains breathability and at the same time protects your animal from getting wet in the rain.
Application in the washing machine ultimately ensures that the treatment passes right through the rug or coat and treats seams, straps and cords as well as the fabric.
How to use
Apply Nikwax Rug Proof™ in the washing machine...
For best results always clean the rug first using Nikwax® Rug Wash™. It is not necessary to dry the item(s) before treatment. It is essential that rugs are thoroughly washed and rinsed. Shake them well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Remove all detergent residue from the detergent dispenser.
- Place the clean rug in the washing machine.
- Use 500 ml per rug. Treat 1 rug per wash load.
- Run a cotton cycle at 30 °C.
Air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits.
Use Nikwax Rug Proof™ by hand...
For best results always clean the rug first using Nikwax® Rug Wash™. It is not necessary to dry the item(s) before treatment. It is essential that rugs are thoroughly washed and rinsed. Shake them well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Wear gloves. Use 500 ml per rug with 10 litres of hand-warm water in a container.
- Stir to mix, push into the container so the entire rug is submerged.
- Add a further 15 litres of warm water to cover the rug and stir.
- Leave soaking for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear.
Air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits.
Apply Nikwax Rug Proof™ with a sponge...
For best results always clean the rug first using Nikwax® Rug Wash™. It is not necessary to dry the item(s) before treatment. It is very important that rugs are thoroughly washed and rinsed. Shake them well before use. Follow the care label instructions.
- Wear gloves. Spread the clean rug on a clean surface and thoroughly dampen it with a hose.
- Use 500 ml per rug with 1.5 litres of hand-warm water.
- Using a new sponge, apply the solution to the rug, working it into the fabric and seams.
- Use any excess on the back of the rug, leave for 5 - 10 minutes.
- Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear.
Air dry or tumble dry on low if the care label permits.
