The Facon is a utility and combat knife originating from South America, particularly widely used in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The Facon was made famous by South American gauchos – "orphans of the pampas" – referring to cattle herders of the pampas. The shape of the knife proved ideal for everything from field dressing game to repairing saddle fittings or cooking. The knife, which resembles a large chef's knife, has its roots somewhere in the 14th century. The blade is made from carbon steel 1090. High-carbon steel (carbon content around 0.90%) is the best choice for long, strong blades, but finds many other uses as well. It sharpens well and holds an edge for a long time, whilst also maintaining high hardness. The handle of the Facon knife is hand-carved with a traditional motif from exotic Malaysian Sal Wood and is finished with a forged nickel insert and pommel at the front and rear. Even the knife's sheath is made in the spirit of Argentine tradition. It is shaped from sturdy black leather, which is stitched with a centre seam, and features a decorative nickel steel heel.
